  • Definition of a Pimp: a man who solicits clients for a prostitute
  • Definition of a Prostitute: a woman who engages in degrading acts for money
  • Definition of Employ: to make use of; to use advantageously

If you frequent my blog you will notice that I often give common definitions for words and then define the term further. The term "pimp" is currently thrown around in everyday chit-chat which has given it more elaborate meaning than that quoted above from Webster's Dictionary. Words can evolve through usage.

To give a more in-depth definition of "pimp" we have to examine what a pimp does. A pimp uses women and/or men to work for his benefit. Those women and/or men benefit also but not as much as the pimp. And how does the pimp get these people to do what he wants? He uses big words, big promises, puts on a big show, advertises his goodies, and lures them until they buy into what he's selling them. He uses everything and everyone to his advantage which means he's an employer (see definition for employ). Every single employer uses what they can to get people to buy into what they are selling. Let's investigate this concept further...

Let's imagine that you own a clothing boutique. You decide where your boutique will be located, what your hours of operation will be, who you will employ, how much those employees will be paid, and how business will be conducted. You put your boutique on a busy corner of the city; you decide it will be open from 9 to 5 and that you need 4 employees. The boutique carries women's clothing and you decide what styles. You put a big ad in the paper for employees. You offer them rewards (whether it be good benefits, discounts, etc.) and tell them what a great employer you are. You tell those employees how to dress, how to act, what to do and say-- basically you own them from 9 to 5, otherwise they can go work elsewhere. Those employees get a small fraction of the profits from your business as you have to keep the store functioning and pay yourself better than them (otherwise you might as well be an employee of someone else, right?). The whole point of owning your own business is so YOU get to make all of the executive decisions -- who, what, why, when and how. You tell your employees when to work, how to dress, what to say, what their position is, when to take breaks, and how much they are worth. These workers of yours stand when you say stand, tuck in a shirt when you say so, get paid when you pay them, and if they choose not to do it you have the power to find someone who will. You collect most of the profits while you divvy out to each employee what you think their value is to your business.

Now let's imagine that you are a pimp...
