The family I remember so loving and true, so full of happiness and bliss
Was once so close, bonded together, shared a love you could not resist.
What happened black family? Have you forgotten your roots?
Have you dug up your ethnicity and given it the boot?
We used to be strong, we used to stand tall
We used to stick together like paint on a wall
We used to share ideas and thoughts and dreams
The love we once had just flowed like a stream
What happened black family? We've given a lot of lack
To stand by one another and watch each other's back
The love we once had has slowly disappeared,
Selfishness has crept into our hearts over the years
What happened black family? Why can't we get along?
Where did our strength go? Why can't we call home?
Our ancestors have taught us the most important truth of all
A family that is divided is surely to fall
We're killing one another with not only knives and guns,
But with words and attitudes, with a weapon called "the tongue".
We strip each other's soul, our hearts so full of hate
We have become the devil's advocate, we have swallowed the devil's bait
What happened black family? Why can't we stick together?
We used to walk through all the storms in any kind of weather
Remember the strong bond we shared, especially when we prayed?
We trusted God for food and clothing and shelter everyday.
We have opened the door to envy and held the knobs of strife
We've argued to the point of rage, does it matter whose wrong or right?
When we climb the ladder of success, we forget to turn around
And take our brother and sister's hand whose fallen to the ground
What happened black family? Your hand has made a fist
That no one can grab or hold or cling or bend or grip or twist
The answer is rather simple, the truth is plain and clear
We've turned our hearts away from God and given into fear
Let's ask the Lord to take our hearts and heal our hurt and pain
And lay aside all of our differences and make us whole again
Let's give our heart and souls to God, let's pray like we did in the past
Let's stand together through thick and thin and pray our love will last
Dear Father, we thank you for this day and this family you've placed us in
Restore our love and joy and peace and make us whole again
Take this dear family and hold it tight into the palm of your hands
So when it opens a sweet perfume of your love spills out again.
